Abstract
Aim: Ligasure system was compared with conventional diathermy for haemorrhoidectomy. Method: 51 patients were submitted to Ligasure haemorrhoidectomy and were compared with 68 patients operated with diathermy. Results: There were no statistical differences in age, gender or clinical symptoms between the two groups. Mean operating time was 19.9 with Ligasure and 24.5 min with diathermy. Patients were discharged the same day or the following day after surgery, without statistical difference. Early complications were similar. Late complications were comparable (1 bleeding in each group and 2 late healing in the control group). VAS was 5.4 for study group and 5.5 for the control group in the 1st week; 2.9 for study group and 3.5 for the control group in the 2nd week. Median healing of scars was 25.4 days for the study group vs. 25.6 days for the control group. Median return to work was 14.6 for the study group vs. 14.7 for the control group. Conclusion: Ligasure haemorrhoidectomy is faster than diathermy haemorrhoidectomy. We observed a reduction of postoperative oedema and minimal reduction of postoperative pain at 15 postoperative days. Healing and return to work were similar to conventional diathermy haemorrhoidectomy. No superiority of Ligasure haemorrhoidectomy was observed.
